How to show New vs Returning Customers in TikTok Ads Manager

How to enable New vs Returning Customers for TikTok

Written by Julia

Introduction

When you turn on customer segmentation for TikTok in TrackBee, every order sends one extra event to your TikTok pixel, next to the normal Purchase event:

  • NewCustomerPurchase: a purchase from someone who buys from your store for the first time.

  • ReturningCustomerPurchase: a purchase from someone who has bought from your store before.

Both events include the order value, so you can see the revenue from each group.

You'll have to turn these events into custom conversions in TikTok Events Manager yourself. This guide walks you through it step by step, and it only takes a couple of minutes!

Step 1: Enable the feature on in TrackBee

  1. Open your TikTok setup in TrackBee

    The last step of the TikTok setup is Segment new vs returning customers.

  2. Click Enable

  3. Click Finish

    All steps on the right should now have a check mark.

From now on, TrackBee sends NewCustomerPurchase or ReturningCustomerPurchase with every order!

Step 2: Wait for the first new and returning order

TikTok only lists an event once it has received it at least once. So you can create the New Customer conversion after your first order from a new customer, and the Returning Customer conversion after your first order from a returning customer.

Even after that order comes in, it can take a few hours before TikTok shows the event in the list. If you don't see it yet, check back later.

Step 3: Create the custom conversions in TikTok

  1. Go to Custom conversions

    Open TikTok Events Manager and click Custom conversions in the menu on the left. Click Get started (or Create custom conversion if you already have custom conversions).

  2. Fill in the form

    Use these settings:

    Custom conversion name -> New Customer Purchase - TrackBee

    Description -> Optional

    Select dataset -> The pixel you connected in TrackBee

    Conversion Event -> NewCustomerPurchase

    Map event to a standard event -> Purchase

    Conditions -> Optional

3. Click Create

New Customer Purchase - TrackBee now shows up in your list.

4. Repeat for returning customers

Click Create custom conversion and fill in the form again, with these two changes:

  • Custom conversion name: Returning Customer Purchase - TrackBee

  • Conversion event: ReturningCustomerPurchase

Keep everything else the same and click Create.

What you'll see afterwards

Both conversions are now in your Custom conversions list:

Good to know

  • Only orders placed after you turned on customer segmentation are split into new and returning. Older orders aren't sent again.

  • Your normal Purchase event keeps working as before. The two custom conversions come on top of it.

  • Pick the same pixel in Events Manager as the one connected in TrackBee. If you have several pixels, check the pixel ID on the TikTok step in TrackBee.
